The Tier 2 visa is a route to work in the UK for skilled workers, who want to earn their qualifications and experience in the country. It allows you to come here if you have a job offer and proof of funds to support yourself while you’re on this route.
What is a Tier 2 visa?
A Tier 2 visa is a work visa for skilled workers from outside the EU. The tier 2 visa allows you to live, work, and study in the UK for up to five years. You can bring your family with you on this visa, but they must be sponsored by an employer or an educational institution. The only way to get a job is through your sponsor’s business; if they don’t have one, then there are no jobs available!
Why does the UK need to attract overseas talent?
The UK is a global leader in many industries, including IT and digital media. It needs to attract overseas talent to fill skill gaps and improve its competitiveness across the board.
Tier 2 visas allow employers to recruit skilled workers from outside the EU (except Switzerland). This includes highly-skilled professionals who can fill specific roles within your company or organization.
Where are Tier 2 visa holders coming from?
The Tier 2 visa holders are coming from all over the world. They are coming from countries that have a Tier 2 visa agreement with the UK, countries that have a Tier 2 visa agreement with another country and then apply for a Tier 2 visa in the UK, or they may be applying on their own.
What types of occupations qualify for sponsorship?
The occupations that can be sponsored through Tier 2 (General) visas include:
- Accountants and Auditors.
- Architectural, Engineering and Related Technicians.
- Barbers, Hairdressers and Hairstylists.
- Business and Financial Analysts.
- Chemical Engineers/Technologists (including those who have been awarded a degree in Petroleum Engineering).
- Civil Engineers (including those who have been awarded an Honours degree level or above).
What other benefits does the Tier 2 (General) Visa offer me?
- You can bring your family members with you to the UK
- You are allowed to stay in the UK for five years as long as you have a valid Tier 2 visa and pay your immigration fees on time. After this period, it is possible for Tier 2 holders to apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR). If granted ILR, they can apply for British citizenship after three years from their date of arrival in the UK
How do I apply for a Tier 2 (General) visa?
If you are outside the UK, you can apply for a Tier 2 (General) visa from outside the UK.
If you are within the UK and want to apply for a Tier 2 visa, then you need to make sure that your employer has paid into the Immigration Health Surcharge Scheme (IHS). This will enable them to sponsor more highly skilled workers who have skills in demand by employers but aren’t available locally or have been denied entry due to a lack of experience because they haven’t been trained yet.
Stage 1 – Job offer & sponsorship
The first stage of the sponsorship process is the job offer. You must be offered a suitable position by your sponsor, who will be a UK employer. Your sponsor must also meet minimum salary threshold requirements that vary depending on your nationality but are usually around £35k per year (and this may increase if you have completed a master’s degree).
If you meet these criteria and want to apply for Tier 2 visa sponsorship as part of this route, then we’ll send your CV into our database so that we can find jobs for our clients in London and beyond!
Stage 2 – Prepare your application
The next step is to prepare your application. You will need the following documents:
- Proof of employment or business ownership in the UK (this could be an incorporated company, partnership or sole trader)
- A completed and signed sponsorship form – available from GOV.UK
Once you have these documents ready, it’s time to send them off!
Stage 3 – Submit your application
The visa application form is the first step in your sponsorship process. You must complete and submit it online, along with all supporting documentation required by the Department of Immigration (DIAC).
The fee for this stage varies depending on your country of origin and the type of visa you apply for. If possible, we recommend submitting your sponsorship application as early as possible, within six months before you need to travel or enter Australia. This will give us enough time to process your application before your departure date so that we can ensure that everything goes smoothly when it comes time for us to meet at our office in Melbourne or Sydney!
