The Applied Bio/Nanotechnology Industrial Research (ABNIR) Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) seeks two enthusiastic summer students with background in one or more of the following disciplines: chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental sciences, water chemistry. These Research Assistants will be part of a team of scientists, engineers and technicians operating under the direction of Dr. Paolo Mussone.

A strong aptitude for teamwork and collaboration, eye for details, comfort with failure, patience, tenacity, sense of humor, and passion for hands-on learning are considered essential skills. Previous field experience collecting, handling, storing and transporting water and soil samples is major asset.

The new team members will work on a high-profile industry funded multi-disciplinary project that is part of the Plastics Research In Action program:

The project is focused on the collection and chemical analysis of both freshwater and sedimentary samples from the North Saskatchewan River within the boundaries of the Edmonton Municipal Region. The project encompasses aspects of field sampling, laboratory analysis, and data analysis. The ideal candidate has prior experience in one or more of these settings. Travel within the Greater Edmonton region will be required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect freshwater and sedimentary samples
  • Prepares freshwater and sedimentary samples for chemical analysis
  • Conducts chemical analysis
  • Acquire and tabulate data using macros within Excel
  • Perform calculations on the tabulated data
  • Write reports/presentations summarizing the data obtained using Word and Power Point
  • Capable of clearly stating objectives for experiments and documenting observations

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Demonstrates comfort with computers and the use of Microsoft Office Applications
  • Demonstrates understanding of lab safety guidelines and best practices including WHIMS, and Occupational Health & Safety guidelines

Qualifications:

  • Must live or study in Alberta
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or protected person under the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and legally entitled to work and study in Canada
  • Must have valid class 5 driving license
  • Must be willing to sign a mutual non-disclosure agreement
